With unemployment rates of 30-40 % it is difficult for poor people to find jobs to feed their families in many countries. Rather than simply distribute food freely, creating dependencies and a loss of dignity, many humanitarian organizations will create “food for work” programs where people can work on community improvement projects, such as road building, in exchange for food.
